Very few have been representing hip hop in Australia for as long as Brisbane's DJ Katch. Katch was the originator of 4ZZZ's legendary Phat Tape show, not to mentiona  pioneering DJ. He was also responsible for the legendary Hydrofunk parties of the late 90's. Eventually he and a Mr David Atkins joined forces to turn Hydrofunk into a record label. Hydrofunk carved a path and set a blueprint for many other Brisbane (not to mention Australian) acts, labels and promoters. They were also Tigermoth's first label when he was with seminal Brisbane hip hop crew, Shin Ki Row. This Saturday night (12th May) at Constance Labe in Fortitude Valley, Hydrofunk are throwing a party to celebrate their 15 years as a label, and they have invited Tigermoth back into the fold to perform on the night. He is the only non-signed performer on the night, and it demonstrates the respect Tigermoth garners from people who have both worked with him and know what the deal is.

Around 2 years ago Tigermoth returned to Tokyo in support of his debut album Underwater Beats. Before his departure a good friend told him to check out "The Low End Theory". From the music hotspot that is LA, "The Lowend Theory" crew of Daddy Kev, The Gaslamp Killer, DJ Nobody, Nocando and D-Styles make regular trips to Japan to spread their message which is essentially, beats, bass and party. In 2009 they took with them to Tokyo, a beats producer by the name of Ras G. His set had a profound effect and influence on Tigermoth. He returned to Australia with such a level of inspiration that he went back to the drawing board to reinvent his live set. To be supporting him in Melbourne with such a dope lineup of producers and performers is an honour. We have a vinyl copy of "Thje 9th Tiger" waiting for him when he arrives.

Dj Krush is without doubt one of the most influential DJ/Producers of the past 20 years and returns to Australia in support of his 20 year anniversary. A pioneer in every sense of the word, and arguably without peer, he has continued to evolve and transend paradigms in a way that few other artists have managed. He is without doubt one on Tigermoth's biggest inspirations and we are as always honoured to support Dj Krush.

When planning my travels to America to have "The 9th Tiger" mastered, I had decided early on that I was going to skate as many places as I could, and it was skating LA and NY that most excited me. I had also decided to capture as much photos as I could, but unfortunately my camera was smashed in the overhead on the first leg of my journey from Sydney to London. This meant buying a new camera, and the replacement was endowed with HD video capture. This was a nice addition and meant that I could also experiment with some video.

I didn't really get around to shooting video until I got to the West Coast of USA and it was something that kinda of organically grew from exploring LA on my skateboard, having a lot of time on my to myself, as much of my travels was on my lonesome, as well as wanting to document the fact that I skated some iconic sections of LA. I began experimenting with some shots filming myself skating and one day in particular I came up with this idea to film my feet (in my favourite kicks no less).

I skated from west of Skid Row into downtown LA and by the time I got there I realised it was pretty easy to move around the city on the deck doing long runs, if you were able to navigate through the city workers and crack heads that frequented the area. I decided I was going to do as long a run as possible and film it in the tradition of Steve McQueen, ala Bullitt. There was never an intention to use this footage in a clip however, and in the end it was only used through necessity.

My intention and plan was to always make a clip to Zoo Animals, and the idea was to capture some world class skaters and intercut this with of footage of some friends going about their art, as well as your everyday city worker going about their days. The idea was that we are all animals in a global zoo, and I wanted to show that a person has choice in their performance behind the bars. Unfortunately the skate team I had organised began to blow up around the world and we couldn't work out a time, so I had to just assemble a clip using the footage I had, yet still suited the theme.

I had visited my good mate and world class street artist Anthony Lister and filmed him over a number of weeks using a HD DLSR I had purchased on returning to Australia. Lister was a big reason for me being able to make inroads in the US, and he is a big inspiration for me through his artwork. In the flimclip he is showing me footage on his camera of Ky, his young boy, skating and doing his first set of steps. There is a real symmetry behind Ky and myself in the clip, and I was elated to see, at completion of editing, that he is in fact wearing a Tiger T-shirt in his skating footage. The synchronicity and majik is amazing. Part of me however thinks Ant may have had it planned all along, from months back when he filmed Ky. "Go on Ky, wear the Tiger shirt and you'll get in Tigermoth's clip" is what I can imagine the scenario to have been. Lister's clever like that, but regardless it was fitting to have Ky in the clip because we are great mates, and he is one of my favourite little kids. A tribute to his mum and dad.

The DJ'ing footage was shot at my studio and was done with Michelle Eskola, a young up and coming Brisbane artist. She also contribute artwork to the Album Cover and helped with the art design of the filmclip. She is a real inspiration as well. One day she came around to help shoot, but inadvertently ended up being a star of the clip. The footage is of her DJ'ing for the first time ever, and she is actually spinning the test press of "The 9th Tiger". I placed a Grenade pendant on the scratching vinyl and told her to scratch without knocking it over. It made for a beautiful shot. This combined with the fact that the scratching vinyl had a picture of a "Tiger Butterfly" was quite fitting. It too was not planned but added to the majik.

The other person of note who made it into my clip is my good mate and art co-conspitor, Marcel Lip(aka awake in dreams). He's the designer of 99% of my artwork and did the cover to the 9th Tiger. It was fitting that he made it to the edit for a number of reasons, as he was the person who encourage me to get back into skating after a 13 year hiatus, and has been a big support with my work dating back to pre Underwater Beats, mainly through his dope graphic design and continual encouragement.

The clip is self made and conceived and had a zero dollar budget, but I'm stoked with how it turned out as it really represents my journey getting "The 9th Tiger" out. It is timely for many reasons as the 12" is now ready, and this is the edited version of the beat that only made it's way to the vinyl version. I hope you enjoy.

Peace,
Tigermoth.

I could probably count on two hands the number of artists over the past 10 or so years that have influenced and inspired me to significant lengths to do what it is that I do. So it is with much happiness and honour for me to be involved personally with two of these acts over the next month, namely DJ Krush and The Opus.

After being an occupant of Japan for close to two years I was able to learn and experience their culture, in particular the dope subculture of underground Japanese hip hop, which was very much predominantly instrumental.During my stay I witnessed DJ Krush a number of times in a number of different settings. I had known and appreciated Krush's music long before going to Japan, but there I was able to experience it on a more personal and spiritual level. Upon seeing Krush perform live for the first time I had the stongest feeling that I had finally seen a musician that "thinks like me". So my path changed from what it was, and I pursued DJ'ing and Beat Making on a more purposeful, passionate level. This is perhaps where my journey as Tigermoth really began.

The day I arrived in Tokyo Japan was unfortunately the day after Krush released what would become one of my favourite albums of all time, Shinso: Message at the Depth. I was bummed to have missed the show but when I heard the album I was blown away and felt this was the exact place I needed to be at this time in my life. The track from the album that grabbed my attention the most was Trihedron. It featured a collab between Krush and his favourire producers at the time, "The Opus" from Chicago, USA.

Later this month (Nov 19th) I am supporting Krush at the HiFi bar in Brisbane. This will be the second time I have supported Krush, but the first time in my hometown. For me personally this represents an evolution. At hopefully is the beginning of a new facet of my life/career. Particularly as I embark for some shows in Japan the following week. Be prepared for my A-Game this night. I am gonna leave no stone unturned.

While living in Japan my japanese mate introduced me to a lot of The Opus' music, from their self titled stuff, to their release with Thawfor and Rubberoom. Over the years they easily became one of my favourite production units of all time. We apparently share a love of The Bomb Squad so it made sense. Since leaving Japan I somehow was able to meet them through the internet, and I was fortunate enough to meet them in Chicago when they came to a small show I did there.

My style and sound owes a lot to "The Opus" so when I had difficulty with "The 9th Tiger" vinyl pressing, I asked them if they could help out, due to the delays. To my absolute elation they agreed and have submitted a remix for the upcoming remix release of " The 9th Tiger", which will feature 6 of my favourite producers.

A lot of time has passed since I first learnt of these two artists and equally a lot of dedication and hard work has gone into my craft over those years. To be involved with these two acts and amazing 3 people over the next month is a small thing in perhaps most peoples eyes, but to me it is a significant beyond words and representative of all the focus I have put into this thing that I do.

PEACE,
Tigermoth.

Few have maintained for as long, and as well as Del the Funky Homosapien. From his pioneering work with his Hieroglyphics crew, his contribution to Deltron 3030 and his work with The Gorillaz, Del has stayed relevant like few others have. The cousin of NWA's Ice Cube, he is without a doubt a lyrical master and will go down in history as a hip hop legend. He has remained as fresh as the day he first dropped 20 years ago, and doesn't look a day older to boot. For these reasons, and many more, I am elated to be supporting him at his Brisbane show and I'l be bringing a set to make the room bounce + more. Don't miss this!

"Tigermoth has just returned from a successful mini-tour of the United States, and it’s easy to see why the man known on his passport as Tim Paterson made so many overseas friends.

An album launch this may have been, but Tigermoth knows how to mix it up for crowd consumption, inter-cutting his own smooth, beat-driven material with some slamming hip hop cuts of the more traditional variety.

He was battling against a royal wedding and the football, but a dedicated crowd came down to the Step Inn to check out the gig, and didn’t leave disappointed. If you think ‘The 9th Tiger’ sounds good on record, then you’ll be blown away by how it translates to the live performance.

Big beats, silken samples and bowel-moving bass were the features, and Tigermoth knows how to deliver the medicine. More of this please, Brisbane." Matt Shea

Sun, 29 May 2011 09:31:00 -0700 Sadat | Tigermoth http://sinisterjazz.com/sadat-tigermoth http://sinisterjazz.com/sadat-tigermoth

"If you listen to hip-hop there's a fair chance you'd know who Sadat X is. Basically, this track is my tribute to him. There's probably a few people who are now listening to this beat and scratching their head thinking "huh". This wouldn't offend me.
Why I initially called this track Sadat I can't recall, but it was most likely that I was listening to a lot of Sadat X at the time, and one album in particular, "Experience and Education". The beats were mainly by DJ Spinna, and the production was dope, though the engineering wasn't entirely to my tastes. What got me most however, were Sadat's flows, words and ideas.
It wasn't long after returning home, after a couple of years abroad in Japan, that I discovered "Experience and Education". I was given a promo copy to review by a local magazine. Leading up to this point a lot of things had happened in my life over the previous few years, some that I don't won't to lessen by writing about now, but they were heavy and intense to say the least. Listening to this album I found something in Sadat's lyrics I could relate to. His ability to rap about heavy subjects, without sounding heavy, was something that even though I don't rap, inspired me to be a better musician, and possibly a better person. I'm not sure if I've yet mastered the art of talking about heavy subjects without being heavy.! ; )
Initially, I don't think the song was named "Sadat" because I wanted to pay tribute to him, but eventually as it took shape, it began to carry the same sort of inspiration for me that Sadat X's lyrics did.
In the end "Sadat" turned out to be a fitting name for this song. Hopefully he gets to hear it one day, and with the blessings of the universe, is inspired a little himself. PEACE!" Tigermoth
